These methods are recommended over pesticide or bait station routes as neither the ants nor the environment are harmed. Experimentation may be necessary as effectiveness is species dependant. Natural products that temporarily repel ants include:
- Ground coffee
- Chalk
- Crushed charcoal
- Baby powder/talcum powder
- Dish soap
- Vinegar
- Peppermint
- Crushed garlic
- Cinnamon
- Black pepper
- Bay leaves
- Cloves
- Tea tree oil
These products can either be placed around the house near unwanted ant trails, or mixed with water and sprayed. They will not harm the environment, but can be washed and blown away by the elements.
Boiling water is an old and often used method to remove unwanted ants. It is cheap, organic, and has an instant effect, however it is only useful if the queen is located and killed. Pouring boiling water inside your house could have other undesired effects, such as burns, wood swellings and short circuits.
